Food Security
The security of food (in abbreviation)
How food is managed in a community.
The maintenance of food, resources and the supply.
Definition:
The state of having reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food.
We can not live without food.
There is enough food to feed the country, but many still do not acquire those resources.
The food must be nourishing, not deadly/poisonous
Enough supply to be purchased
Food must be culturally acceptable
Must be nutritious.
Largest barrier for accepting food is social economic status.
2700000 will experience house food insecurity in Canada.
Food deserts are low income areas with limited to no food source
Groceries tend to be placed near areas where the prices are higher.
High income communities generally have more efficient food sources.
Transportation becomes difficult in food deserts
Low income communities are more likely to be obese, as the food available is higher in sugars and fat.
Locally grown food is beneficial, it is healthy and economically safe (money wise)
Higher nutritional content.
Aspects of Food Security
Availability: Sufficient food for everyone.
Accessibility: Physical and economic access to food for everyone at all times
Adequacy: Access to food that is nutritious and safe, and produced in environmentally sustainable ways.
Acceptability: Access to culturally accepted food, which is produced and obtained in ways that do not compromise people’s dignity, self-respect, or human rights (organisations, charities)
Agency: The policies and processes that enable the achievement of food security (donations).
Food security is one of the most important issues facing the world today. There are countries around the world that produce more than enough food for the population, and there are those where up to 1 billion people live on the edge of poverty.
“The world’s hunger is getting ridiculous. There is more fruit in a rich man’s shampoo than in a poor man’s plate.”
Developing countries have food supplies that are grown or gathered.
They spend a majority of their time growing, planting, harvesting and looking after animals.
These activities provide people with all their food requirements, such as milk and meat to grain and rice, wheat and corn.
In developing countries, people have lots of food, while others suffer from famine.
Agriculture:
The science, art or occupation concerned with cultivating land, raising crops, and feeding, breeding and raising livestock.
Dry, barren wasteland with no liable resources. Malnourishment within communities.
I wonder how this image isn’t shown to the public more often, how the general public rarely views these problems which leads them to certain circumstances, where they do not care for these people as they don’t know their current situations or problems. These people become heartless because of the long period of time where they do not experience or view these problems, separates them from those countries and become more concerned about their own wellbeing. From the lack of information shown by these 3rd world countries, 1st world countries are finally viewing these problems, but because audiences know that it has been going on for a long period of time, they believe that those countries will survive on their own, that because they didn’t intervene earlier, they have become ignorant to these countries that have suffered for many years.
